Late lapse derails Hoops as KuPS snatch equaliser in Conference tie

Late lapse derails Hoops as KuPS snatch equaliser in Conference tie

According to a Sport contributor, a late lapse saw the Hoops concede as KuPS snatched a precious equaliser, with substitute Piotr Parzyszek finding the net in the 85th minute to leave Shamrock Rovers and Finnish champions dead‑locked in the Conference League playoff first leg at Tallaght Stadium.

Late equaliser shatters Rovers' momentum

Parzyszek, who entered the match in the 58th minute, pounced on a Bob Nii Armah cross to beat Ed McGinty, delighting the 13 travelling fans in the East Stand. The goal came five minutes from the final whistle, erasing the lead Rovers had built.

Rovers had taken the initiative four minutes into the second half when Republic of Ireland international Enda Stevens fired home after a low Jack Byrne free was mishandled by KuPS goalkeeper Johannes Kreidl. A VAR check dismissed KuPS' claim that Lee Grace had fouled the keeper, allowing the Hoops to press on.

Week of setbacks raises stakes for the tie

Stephen Bradley's side created numerous chances but missed several key opportunities: Tunmise Sobowale fluffed a chance from 14 yards, Jonathan Afolabi saw his ball poked off by Kasim Nuhu and Sobowale later blazed over from the edge of the box. Graham Burke and Lee Grace also failed to convert, leaving the scoreline vulnerable.

The defeat followed a week of disappointment, with the team suffering a 5-1 humiliation in Albania last Thursday and relinquishing their FAI Cup crown after blowing a 2-0 lead to St Patrick’s Athletic in Sunday’s third‑round defeat. Bradley’s charges were trying to atone for those setbacks.

Amid a subdued atmosphere in front of 4,522 spectators at Tallaght Stadium, Rovers dominated large portions of the opening half but lacked the composure in the final third to capitalise on their possession. The crowd’s muted reaction reflected the lingering sting of recent losses.

The tie remains open, but Rovers would have liked a bigger cushion ahead of next week’s trip to Finland, especially given their poor away record in Europe this summer. A stronger lead would have eased the pressure on the squad.

Michael Noonan, Aaron Greene and Danny Mandroiu were introduced in the closing 21 minutes, bringing the total chance tally to 13 for Rovers against KuPS’ three, yet the Hoops still fell short of the two‑goal cushion they craved.
