LASK stun in Lisbon despite Suárez's brace
At the José Alvalade stadium in Lisbon, under the floodlights and in front of 48,985 spectators, on Wednesday 21 October 2026 the Group Stage J‑3 match of the Champions League kicked off. Luis Suárez opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a penalty, providing a brilliant start for Sporting Portugal.
LASK comes back and takes the victory
LASK Linz turned the match around and secured the win. After Suárez's goal, Jorgensen handed the ball to Christoph Lang, who equalised at the fifteen‑minute mark. The Austrians took the lead with Sasa Kalajdzic (63') and Danek (68'), and held on until the end to finish 3‑2. Ana Brigida's report highlights the speed with which LASK responded to the opening goal.
Suárez, who took the penalty without missing, completed his brace in the 89th minute, finishing a rebound and leaving the Austrian goalkeeper with no options. It was his ninth consecutive match with a goal for the 'lions', maintaining his unbeaten streak. Even with two goals, it was not enough to avoid defeat.
Incidents and cards
The match was marked by incidents and cards. Goalkeeper Jungwirth had to be substituted after a heavy clash with Suárez. Referee Nicholas Walsh showed yellow cards to Doumbia and Simões (Sporting) and to Lang, Horvath, Kalajdzic, Schützenauer and Danek (LASK).
Sporting's starting eleven were Kaique; Araújo, Inácio, Quaresma, Fresneda; Altimira, Simões (Gonçalves, 67'), Doumbia (Ioannidis, 80'), Catamo (Guilherme, 79'); Irankunda (Derry, 79') and Luis Suárez. LASK lined up Jungwirth (Schützenauer, 52'), Jorgensen (Flecker, 83'), Mbuyamba, Alemão, Andrade, Dibango; Danek, Ljubicic, Horvath (Schöpf, 65'), Kalajdzic (Usor, 83') and Lang (Adeniran, 65').
With the three points, LASK records its first Champions League victory and its first points in Lisbon. The Austrian side still has to return to Portugal to face Porto and, later, take on Real Madrid.
The setback marks Sporting's first defeat of the season, having started the phase with confidence after a 1‑4 thrashing of LASK in 2020. The Austrians' surprise reshapes the group and raises questions about the continuation of Portuguese dominance in the Champions competition.
