Lampard’s critique highlights Arsenal’s physical edge after Coventry loss

Kai Havertz’s opening strike set the tone as Arsenal dispatched Coventry City 3‑0 at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night, a result that prompted Frank Lampard to proclaim the champions’ physicality from the touchline and to argue Arsenal have shown exactly why they are Premier League champions.

Arsenal’s early‑season statement

Goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard completed the rout, giving Arsenal a flawless start to their Premier League campaign. The trio’s contributions underscored the team’s attacking depth and secured the victory over Lampard’s side.

Coventry, who captured the Championship by an 11‑point margin last season, struggled to threaten Arsenal in their Premier League return. The Sky Blues managed only one shot on target throughout the match.

Lampard admitted his players found it difficult to cope with Arsenal’s defensive organisation and said he could feel the ‘physicality’ from Mikel Arteta’s side from the touchline. He noted that Arsenal’s structure left little room for Coventry to create chances.

“It’s very, very hard to high press this team because they’ll play through you and rip through you,” Lampard said after the defeat. “They have a bit of everything, they’re very good off the ball, the best out‑of‑possession team in the league last year, all the data backs it up,” he added.

In a separate interview with Coventry’s club media channel, Lampard warned that many teams will find it challenging to win away at Arsenal this season. He acknowledged that falling two goals behind and conceding a third early in the second half makes recovery extremely difficult.
