LaLiga apologises to China as Mbappe’s Mao comment halts broadcasts

On 27 October 2026 in ISTANBUL, LaLiga president Javier Tebas issued a formal apology to China after Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe referred to Mao Zedong as a dictator in a Bridge interview, prompting CCTV to suspend LaLiga and Mbappe’s matches and triggering a swift commercial backlash.
Backlash in China
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV responded by halting all LaLiga and Mbappe match transmissions, immediately reducing the league’s visibility in the market. In addition, several Chinese firms terminated advertising contracts with the French international, amplifying the commercial fallout.
LaLiga and Mbappe apologise
In a social‑media statement, Tebas stressed that Mbappe’s remarks reflected his personal view and not the position of LaLiga or its clubs, while expressing deep regret for the offence caused. “We understand the harm caused and want to sincerely apologise to the Chinese people on behalf of LaLiga,” he wrote. Tebas highlighted the league’s long‑standing relationships with Chinese authorities, sports bodies, broadcasters and millions of fans, built on mutual respect and trust, adding that “Our commitment to China, its people and its institutions remains unwavering.” He warned that the controversy could affect all twenty clubs in Spain’s top division, urging that a single player’s comment should not jeopardise the league’s broader engagement with Chinese audiences.

Mbappe later issued his own apology, saying his comment was “unfortunate” and that he now understands it hurt many people in China and the Chinese community worldwide. “I apologise to everyone I may have hurt with my words. That was absolutely not my intention,” he said, adding his deep respect for the Chinese people and their history.
Earlier this year, Javier Tebas took part in the forum “Defense of the European Football Ecosystem” organised by the newspaper La Vanguardia in Barcelona, Spain, on 16 March 2023.
