Laia López leads Spain to the world title after the penalty shootout

As the pressure of the penalty shootout loomed, Laia Guante, Golden Glove, was sure she would stop more than one kick. The Real Madrid goalkeeper became the heroine of the women’s U‑20 national team by saving two penalties in the World Cup final against North Korea.

The clash that defined the championship

The score remained unchanged during regular time and extra time, forcing Spain to wait for the penalties to eliminate the Asian side. After the shootout, Spain was crowned U‑20 world champions.

"Missing out on the World Cup affected me," commented journalist Pepe Gil‑Vernet, recalling Laia’s absence in the earlier stage. Coach Mario Calderón added: "I'm speechless, this team deserved it."

Reactions from the goalkeeper and the team

Laia López explained: "Football owed us one. We won on penalties and there is no better way. This team leaves me speechless, truly." She also highlighted that she had trained the penalties and that the players trusted her.

The goalkeeper, chosen as the best keeper of the tournament, said: "Everything is strategy. Every part of football is important. I was sure I would stop another kick and the players trusted me."

After the match, Laia commented on the experience away from home: "We felt super covered. We have spent a month away from our families. Having so many parents able to come is a luxury."

Finally, she recalled that she had not conceded any goal throughout the tournament and that she kept her promises: "The team has done a great job at the back. I keep my promises."
