La Liga's salary cap blocks Carvajal's transfer to Getafe
Dani Carvajal's transfer, 34‑year‑old, from Real Madrid to Getafe was blocked today, after La Liga deemed the proposed salary of 400 000 euros per season too low compared with the 10 million earned at Madrid, thus breaching the league's salary regulations.
A rich career and the salary blockage
Dani Carvajal, aged thirty‑four, left Real Madrid as a free agent after thirteen seasons (from 2013 to 2026). During his spell, he amassed twenty‑six titles, including six Champions Leagues, and was considered a potential joker for Getafe, which hoped to keep him close to his Madrid home. As a right‑back, he provided experience and stability to the defence.
La Liga blocked the operation invoking its salary regulations, judging the proposed salary of 400 000 euros per season far lower than the ten million earned by Carvajal at Real Madrid. An independent committee of three experts was tasked with verifying that the signing complied with the budget allocated to the club’s squad. The committee concluded that the proposed salary breached the ceiling set for the season.
Reactions from President Angel Torres
Surrounded by cameras, Getafe president Angel Torres said on Wednesday, “There is nothing, everything fell apart.” Journalists noted the president’s resigned tone in response to the sudden collapse of the recruitment project.
When questioned later, Angel Torres downplayed the chances of seeing Carvajal in azulón, stating that the club had many free agents such as Parejo or Sergio Ramos. These options remain under consideration. He also indicated that the player wanted a release clause in January, a proposal that Getafe would have rejected.
Liga regulations and precedents
Journalist Tono Garcia reminded that La Liga aims to prevent hidden payments and fraud by prohibiting clubs from setting salaries themselves. An evaluation body determines the salary based on acquisition cost, release clause, age, market and contract length. This measure protects financial fairness among La Liga clubs.
Under this system, the salary determined for Carvajal would have far exceeded the 400 000 euros proposed, blowing Getafe’s salary cap and making the signing impossible without a budget adjustment. The Madrid‑suburb club could not raise its ceiling without compromising other positions.
In 2023, FC Barcelona saw its loan of Joao Felix rejected after proposing 800 000 euros annually, with La Liga re‑evaluating the salary to eight million euros. It also noted that Carvajal wanted a release clause in January, which Getafe would have refused. Getafe will have to revise its offer if the player wants to join another club in January.
