FPF celebrates Cristiano Ronaldo's goal, ignores Samu Costa's

Back in Saudi Arabia after leaving the Portuguese national team, Cristiano Ronaldo found the back of the net on Friday with Al-Nassr against Al-Diriyah, scoring his 980th goal in a 3-0 win. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) immediately highlighted this moment, while the second Portuguese goal, scored by Samu Costa, remained in the shadows.

Ronaldo's goal praised

The FPF posted on its social media a photo of Ronaldo wearing the Seleçao jersey, accompanied by the text “Goal by Cristiano Ronaldo during Al‑Nassr’s victory”. The post received many reactions, highlighting the symbolic importance of the 980th goal of the five‑time Ballon d’Or winner.

The match, which took place on the eighth matchday of the Saudi Pro League, saw Al‑Nassr supporters cheer their star from the first quarter‑hour. Ronaldo opened the scoring, then Kingsley Coman, the Frenchman, added another tally for the Riyadh side, bringing the total to three goals.

While the first goal was highlighted, the second Portuguese goal was scored by Samu Costa, who has seven caps. This goal, set up by his compatriot João Félix, received no official mention from the Federation, which left the gesture in the shadows.

The dispute between Ronaldo and coach Jorge Jesus, which led the player to leave the national team during the international break, continues to weigh on the Federation’s communication. Since that incident, the FPF appears to be “walking on eggshells”, avoiding any direct comment on the drama.

Despite the lack of an official statement, the Federation’s mixed reaction – celebrating Ronaldo’s goal while omitting Costa’s – shows the sensitivity of the issue as the football World Cup approaches, where every action of Portuguese players is scrutinized.
