KNVB condemns fireworks by Feyenoord supporters in Leeuwarden clash

As the sun set on Sunday afternoon in Leeuwarden, a handful of Feyenoord supporters ignited fireworks inside the stadium, sending sparks into the crowd and injuring several Cambuur fans. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) issued a forceful condemnation, calling the act forbidden and dangerous.

“The launching of fireworks inside a stadium is prohibited, unhealthy, dangerous and runs counter to what football stands for,” the KNVB said. The statement, issued by De KNVB, referred to the actions of Feyenoord-aanhangers who threw fireworks during the match.

The incident left supporters of the home side, SC Cambuur, injured, prompting the KNVB to note that “it harms players, officials and supporters and can lead to serious consequences, as seen with the fans struck by fireworks.” The association warned that anyone guilty has no place in the stadium.

“We are doing everything to locate the perpetrators and punish them firmly,” the KNVB added. It warned that offenders could face a nationwide stadium ban for igniting fireworks.

Feyenoord’s general director Robert Eenhorn expressed disgust at the incident, while SC Cambuur defender Jamal Amofa and coach Johan Plat also issued statements condemning the behaviour.

“Football is better off without these individuals,” the KNVB concluded, emphasizing that preserving safety and the spirit of the game must remain paramount.
