Klopp warns: too much pressure on Florian Wirtz at Liverpool and Anfield in the Premier League
Jürgen Klopp says that the German midfielder Florian Wirtz has become the target of criticism too often since he started playing for Liverpool. The new Germany national team coach has already been in contact with the 23‑year‑old about his plans and wants to reduce the pressure.
Contact between Klopp and Wirtz
Klopp said during a press briefing on the way to the international break that he and Wirtz have already gotten to know each other and occasionally exchange messages. He said he wants to keep Wirtz, “Flo”, at Liverpool, without the high transfer fee dominating the attention.
Wirtz’s adaptation at Liverpool
Wirtz is in his second season at Liverpool and still struggles to fully find his footing at Anfield. Despite the large investment, he is often judged on individual moments rather than on the collective play.
During the international break in March, Wirtz still made a strong impression for Germany, but he could not save the team in the round of 16 against Paraguay at the World Cup. Klopp emphasized that one should not expect exceptional performances every time.
According to Klopp, the focus must shift from individual expectations to team play. He believes that Wirtz helps the team, even when he is not directly involved in the goals, and that experts judge his impact too quickly.
Klopp debuts as Germany's national team coach on Thursday evening in the away match against the Netherlands. This is followed by home games against Greece and Serbia, after which the international break ends with an away match against Greece.
