Klopp urges Liverpool fans to trust Wirtz as Bayern rule out move
Jurgen Klopp has told Liverpool supporters to have full faith in Florian Wirtz after Bayern Munich decided against signing the 23‑year‑old attacking midfielder. The German international, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million in the summer of 2025, has recorded seven goals and 11 assists in 54 matches for Liverpool. Klopp made the comments as Germany prepare for a UEFA Nations League double in September.
Klopp backs Wirtz amid Bayern rumours
Speaking at a press conference on Sep 17, Klopp said, “The exchange with Flo was very pleasant. We’re keeping in touch from time to time. I think he’s the player who covered the most ground at Liverpool this season, so the willingness is absolutely there.” He added that fans should move away from expecting “special moments” and instead value a performance that helps the team, even without a goal or assist.
Wirtz’s Liverpool spell has not lived up to the hype surrounding his £116 million fee. He won the Bundesliga title in 2024 with Bayer Leverkusen and was persuaded to join Merseyside by Arne Slot, but his output has been modest. Nevertheless, Klopp believes the former Bayer star should be judged on more than raw statistics.
Rumours of a Bayern raid for Wirtz in 2027 were addressed by journalist Christian Falk on September 16. Falk wrote that it is “NOT TRUE” that Bayern Munich are tracking the Liverpool player and that no move is planned. He noted two secret meetings – one in Munich and one in Liverpool – before Wirtz chose Anfield, and highlighted Bayern’s deep squad, Musiala’s illness, and the presence of Vincent Kompany’s new system centred on Michael Olise.

Germany’s Nations League schedule
Klopp, who returned to management by taking the Germany job after leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season, has included Wirtz in his squad for the upcoming international break. Germany will face the Netherlands and Greece in September in the UEFA Nations League, followed by matches against Serbia and Greece in October.
The German manager’s endorsement of Wirtz comes as the national side seeks consistency ahead of the September fixtures. Klopp’s dual role – Germany boss and former Liverpool manager – could see him work closely with the Liverpool midfielder both at club and international level.
While Bayern remain “confident” with their current roster, Falk reminded readers that if Wirtz ever wishes to return to the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich would be the first club he would approach. For now, the focus remains on his development under Liverpool’s new manager Andoni Iraola and the support of Klopp at the international level.
