Klopp shifts Kimmich into midfield – Bayern captain changes role

Jürgen Klopp, the new national team coach, has made it clear about Joshua Kimmich: The 31‑year‑old Bayern captain remains in the national team, but from now on he will play again in central midfield, no longer as a right‑back – a decision that was announced during the first matchday after the 5‑1 victory over VfB Stuttgart.

Joshua Kimmich's time in the German national team, especially during his tenure as captain, has been little successful – and that politely put. Several disappointments have marked his international career, most recently the again early exit at the last World Cup. As captain he had to lead the team through difficult phases, which amplified the criticism of his international record.

Klopp already told Kimmich during his first stadium visit that he will keep the captain's armband but should return to the central midfield position. The announcement came as the Munich side beat VfB Stuttgart 5‑1 at home, providing a positive backdrop for the news. Thus Kimmich resumes his usual Bayern role in the DFB team, away from right‑back duties.

By returning to midfield Kimmich can continue his playmaking as in Munich while also exercising leadership in the team. Coach Klopp emphasizes that Kimmich's experience in the central area should improve ball circulation and stabilise the German side's pressing. The switch marks a clear break from his previous deployments as a full‑back.

Kimmich returns to central midfield

The positional change creates a gap in the squad at the right‑back position. Potential regulars mentioned are Ridle Baku from RB Leipzig and Elias Baum from Eintracht Frankfurt, both of whom are expected to be nominated for the squad. A solid right‑back is considered crucial for the defensive balance, which is why the candidates are already being observed in the training camp.

In central midfield Kimmich could in the future pair up with Felix Nmecha or Aleksandar Pavlovic, both of whom regularly share the midfield at Bayern. Both midfield options have a high work rate and suit Kimmich's defensive style, which could foster harmony in the core of the team. These options give Klopp flexibility in shaping the tactical concept.

Right‑back options and new midfield partners

Klopp is expected to try out various combinations to find the ideal lineup. The final decision is likely to be made after the next friendly matches, once Klopp has assessed the performances in training. The final squad remains open until the next competitive match.
