Klopp sees hope in a short spell despite defeat in Augsburg
In the packed WWK Arena in Augsburg, head coach Jürgen Klopp experienced his first home match on Sunday evening with the German national team, which ended in a 0‑1 defeat to Greece; nevertheless he emphasized that the brief period in the second half was a positive turning point.
After the match, Klopp spoke on ARD and took full responsibility: “It is part of the process. The lineup, the many substitutions, that is all 100 percent on me.” He repeated the motto: “You may lose, but you must not.”
Compared with the 1‑1 draw against the Netherlands on Thursday, he made five changes to his starting eleven. Alexander Nübel, Yann Aurel Bisseck and debutant Bambase Conte started instead of Marc‑Andre ter Stegen, Nico Schlotterbeck and Nadiem Amiri – a clear signal to the players that he is looking for the right path.
Positive highlight in the second half
Klopp highlighted the first 15 minutes of the second half as his “positive highlight”. “Then we knew what the opponent was doing, the team adjusted to it and the patterns were there,” he praised, but criticised the lack of consistent execution afterwards.
Goalkeeper Alexander Nübel, who was playing his fourth international match, criticised that the team had created only one or two clear chances. “Inside the penalty area we didn’t even get a shot,” he said.
Jürgen Klopp must react after bitter defeat in Augsburg
Captain Joshua Kimmich, 31 years old, summed up the match soberly: “We were too static, not creative enough. For me a 0‑0 would have been fair – losing is very unfortunate.” He will no longer be part of the squad for the next match.
Outlook on the next Nations‑League matches
The next opponent for the German team is Serbia on the coming Thursday in Munich; the return match in Greece is scheduled for the following Sunday. With six points from the first two games, Germany leads Group 2 in League A, but sits in third place.
Dimitrios Kourbelis gave Greece a 1‑0 win in the 74th minute, in front of 28,945 spectators in Augsburg. His goal dealt a heavy blow to the new DFB coach on his home debut.
Further developments in Group A
On the same matchday, the Netherlands under manager Xavi beat Serbia 2‑1, with Mexx Meerdink scoring twice for the “the Oranje”. Cody Gakpo had to be substituted in the 17th minute due to an ankle injury.
