Klopp's September squad secret pits fresh start against World Cup flop

Jürgen Klopp approaches his first international friendly debut (Länderspiel-Debüt) with a secret DFB-Kader that will be unveiled on 17 September, a Woche before the Nations-League-Start against the Niederlande. The announcement follows the DFB-Team’s Sechzehntelfinale exit in Amerika, a WM-Flop that triggered a trainer change.

Klopps plan is to keep the Kader-Geheimnis under wraps until the day before the Nations-League start, delivering his highly anticipated first Nationalmannschaftskader. As the new Bundestrainer, he will name the squad on 17 September, exactly a Woche before the first match of the Nations-League-Start in Amsterdam.

From World Cup disappointment to fresh start

The Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft in Amerika ended in a Sechzehntelfinale loss to Paraguay, a WM-Flop that forced the DFB to replace Julian Nagelsmann with Klopp as Nachfolger. At a Pressekonferenz on the Frankfurter DFB-Campus, Klopp promised a Neubeginn for the Nationalmannschaft, citing the need to restore Spannung and pride.

During the same press event, Klopp recalled his optimistic remarks from 15 August, saying he would approach the role “voller Optimismus”. He stressed that future Länderspiele must become a Highlight for every player and fan, aiming to turn the recent WM disappointment into a catalyst for change.

Road ahead in Nations League

The first test arrives on 24 September in Amsterdam versus the Niederlande, marking Klopp’s debut as Bundestrainer. Subsequent home fixtures follow: Augsburg against Griechenland on 27 September, München versus Serbien on 1 October, and a return clash in Thessaloniki on 4 October.

Klopp’s DFB-Kader comprises 57 Feldspieler, including the 40‑year‑old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who has already retired from the Nationalmannschaft. Injuries sideline Nico Schlotterbeck, while young talent Said El Mala (19) from Köln is highlighted as a future star. A 34‑year‑old former Barcelona loanee now serves as Ajax Amsterdam’s starting keeper, underscoring the blend of experience and youth.

The contrast between a tightly guarded September reveal and the stark memory of the America WM-Flop illustrates Klopp’s determination to rewrite the narrative of the DFB. By pairing a secretive squad rollout with a clear roadmap of Nations‑League fixtures, the new Bundestrainer signals a decisive shift toward rebuilding the Nationalmannschaft for upcoming challenges.
