Klopp's Germany stumble at home as Greece claim narrow win

Germany’s first home test under Jürgen Klopp ended in disappointment as Greece snatched a 1‑0 victory, exposing a tentative start to the new era that lacks the expected ‘rock‑and‑roll’ flair. The match at the WWK Arena in Augsburg highlighted a struggle to create clear chances despite dominating possession.

Augsburg hosts a rare home test

The game on Sunday the 27th marked only the second occasion Augsburg has hosted the senior German side, and the second fixture of the Klopp era. Germany fell 1‑0, the decisive goal coming from Dimitris Kourbelis.

Greece produced few attacks, but a chance at the 67th minute was squandered when Vangelis Pavlidis’s cross left Fotis Ioannidis to miss a free‑kick from the edge of the small area. Konstantinos Tzolakis emerged as the standout player, making several saves and keeping the Greeks in the match despite the German pressure.

Germany struggle to create clear chances

In the first half Germany enjoyed 79 percent possession but failed to generate clear opportunities, and the trademark ‘rock‑and‑roll’ intensity associated with Klopp never materialised. Karim Adeyemi was the most incisive German, repeatedly threatening the Greek defence and producing the best chance when he dribbled from midfield, bypassed Kostas Tsimikas and shot over the bar.

Joshua Kimmich, who played as a right‑back in the World Cup, reverted to a midfield role and participated actively in the build‑up, while Felix Nmecha continued his good form as a second‑forward, attempting progressive passes and driving the ball forward.

Other newcomers such as Younes Ebnoutalib and Bambasé Conte offered little impact, and the Eintracht Frankfurt striker managed a weak cross‑field chance without a proper finish.

Germany’s next challenge arrives on Thursday the 1st, when they host Serbia at the same venue, followed by a return clash with Greece in Athens on Sunday the 4th, as FIFA’s international window continues.
