Klopp's first Germany squad of 44 marks new era amid political debate

Jürgen Klopp announced on Thursday his inaugural Germany squad, naming 44 players for the upcoming Uefa Nations Liga fixtures. The call‑up signals the start of a new era for the national side and comes as the country grapples with a recent surge in far‑right support.

Squad composition and group division

The roster blends seasoned internationals with fresh faces. Returning veterans include Marc‑André ter Stegen, Serge Gnabry, Yann Aurel Bisseck and Anton Stach, while a host of newcomers will make their senior debuts. Klopp split the 44 men into two distinct groups to cover the four scheduled matches.

Nation's League schedule

Germany will contest four Nations Liga games between September and October. The first clash is against the Netherlands on 24 September 2026 at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam (HOL). The second sees Germany host Greece on 27 September 2026 in the WWK Arena, Augsburg (ALE). A third fixture pits Germany against Serbia on 1 October 2026 at the Allianz Arena, Munich (ALE), followed by an away game to Greece on 4 October 2026 in the Toumba Stadium, Thessaloniki (GRE).

Klopp's broader message

During the press conference Klopp warned that recent regional elections had left many questioning the direction of the country. He referred to the Saxony‑Anhalt vote in which the AfD secured 43.8 percent of the vote, saying, "Some said it was fine, others asked, 'My God, what is happening here?'"

Klopp stressed he is not a political specialist but added, "I want to recover the flag for myself and for us. I do not want to leave national pride in the hands of the wrong people." He suggested the concept of "positive patriotism" could still be useful.

He praised Germany as a "formidable country" and affirmed his pride in being German while remaining open, diverse, friendly and kind. Klopp also highlighted the importance of doctors, medical staff and a wide range of professions, arguing that football can foster a sense of community.

Referencing recent sporting triumphs, Klopp cited Alexander Zverev’s victories at Roland Garros in June and the US Open the following Sunday, as well as successes in field hockey, women’s basketball and European athletics. He said, "Our mission is to create the right environment, and that requires people willing to embrace it."

Looking ahead, Klopp will use the upcoming Nations Liga matches to evaluate the young talents he has invited, aiming to blend experience with a fresh generation as Germany prepares for future competitions.
