Klopp praises Guardiola while City battles title loss

While Jürgen Klopp emphasizes his great respect for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City's football during their intense duels as Liverpool manager, the English club is simultaneously under the looming shadow of a possible stripping of its titles due to serious financial breaches in the Premier League.

Respect for the Rival

Klopp stresses that his respect for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City's football during the period when both teams played each other at the highest level is too great to say anything now. As Liverpool manager from 2015 to 2024, he led his side into the fiercest duels against Guardiola's City in the Premier League. The two managers often faced each other, with City being regarded as one of Liverpool's biggest opponents.

Political Voice

An independent commission has found Manchester City guilty on all counts of breaching the Premier League's financial rules between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. The club denies the allegations and plans to appeal. Possible sanctions range from a massive points deduction to the stripping of titles and even exclusion from the Premier League.

At the final press conference before the Nations League match between Germany and Serbia on Thursday, Klopp said: “My respect for Pep Guardiola and the football at City during the time we played each other and what a opponent they were for us at the highest level is far too great for me to say anything here now.”

When asked whether a possible stripping of titles could benefit Liverpool, he replied: “It’s not that I need that, that I would then be a few more English champions. I’m completely fine with what has happened and what we have achieved.”

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, himself a former mayor of Greater Manchester, warned against pre‑judging Manchester City. He said: “I think it’s only right that Manchester City and its fans have the opportunity to continue challenging the situation if they consider it unfair.”

City now has time to appeal the verdict, while the commission has already outlined the possible penalties. Should a title be stripped, Liverpool FC could benefit retroactively, although Klopp stresses that he is not interested in that. The decision on a possible points deduction or exclusion from the Premier League is still pending.

Thus the two worlds remain: on the one hand a manager who holds the sporting opponent in high regard, on the other a club whose future is shadowed by financial violations. The developments show that respect on the pitch does not automatically mitigate the legal battles.
