Klopp hailed as champion: DFB stars celebrate first win over Serbia
Champion DFB stars celebrate Jürgen Klopp, who finally secured his first win as national team coach on his third attempt with the second squad – a confident 2-0 against Serbia, which, according to the players, could have been an even bigger result.
First win with second squad
After two failed attempts, Klopp opted for a changed lineup for the third time and guided the DFB team to a clear 2-0 win over Serbia. The players felt the result was too narrow, believing the team could have scored more goals. The victory marks the first success of Klopp since his appointment as national team coach.
Choosing the second squad demonstrated that Klopp is ready to integrate new players while refining the playing system. In doing so, he signaled the upcoming generational transition phase, which he has already highlighted compared to his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann.
Midfield clicks, Wirtz scores in the second half
The central midfield of Aleksandar Pavlovic, Tom Bischof and Florian Wirtz operated like a well‑oiled machine and formed the foundation of the victory. Florian Wirtz, 23, scored the second goal in the second half and, after the substitution of Serge Gnabry, even took on the captain's armband.
Through his dual role as goal‑scorer and captain, Wirtz showed that he is not only technically gifted but also a strong leader. His performance in the half was especially highlighted by his teammates.
Players hail Klopp as a champion
Florian Wirtz told RTL and Sky Sport: “He has a very good rapport with every player. He approaches each player and tries to give him a good feeling that he is important and that he deserves to be here.” He added that it is important that every player feels valued, and that for this reason he regards Klopp as a true champion.
Said El Mala, 20, celebrated his well‑deserved DFB debut against Serbia and also praised the coach’s open and honest manner. “He is simply a coach who is open and honest with you. We don’t have to downplay it: He has built a huge career,” El Mala said, emphasizing that Klopp is close to the players and conveys a strong sense of community.
At 59, Klopp has already initiated the generational change, a step his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann could not accomplish in the same way. The positive sense of renewal in the country and the team is, according to the players, described as a direct effect of the personal approach of Klopp.
