Kevin Keegan Harley-Davidson auction fuels charity drive
Just days after Kevin Keegan’s death, his bespoke Harley‑Davidson Sportster fetched £35,075 at a London auction, drawing enthusiastic bidders who sought to honour the former England striker. The auction house confirmed that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a cancer charity, turning a personal relic into a fundraiser.
The bike sold was a 1990 Harley‑Davidson Sportster, listed at £35,075. Its bespoke livery was commissioned by Keegan, who styled himself “King Kev”, and drew on his iconic spell at Newcastle United. The motorcycle had originally been bought from a Newcastle dealership, later displayed at the Newcastle Breweries Museum, and finally placed on a custom plinth in Keegan’s home office.
Built on an XLH 1200 Sportster platform, the machine featured custom drag bars, billet levers and a shortened mudguard. Specialists at Motor Restoration recently recommissioned the bike, fitting new tyres and confirming its excellent condition.
Keegan had instructed H&H Classics to sell the motorcycle five months before his death, and the winning bidder was an American‑domiciled British businessman.

Mike Davis, senior motorcycle specialist at H&H Classics, remarked that bidders could feel the passion for one of the country’s greatest footballers. The sale was reported by PA, turning a personal relic into a fundraiser for the disease that claimed Keegan’s life.
Keegan, a former Liverpool forward in the 1970s who later played for and managed Newcastle, had been receiving treatment for stage‑four cancer before his death at 75. His passing was announced on Monday and prompted tributes from former clubs Scunthorpe, Hamburg, Southampton and Liverpool.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe laid flowers outside St James’ Park, where supporters gathered to honour the former England striker.
Newcastle and Liverpool are now discussing how to mark Keegan’s legacy when they meet for the opening fixture of the new Premier League season on Sunday, 23 August. Both clubs have said they will consult Keegan’s family as they consider a permanent memorial.
