Kevin De Bruyne faces a mental test in the Champions League against Arsenal

Kevin De Bruyne faces a mental test in the Champions League against Arsenal

In the closing stages of the Champions League match between Napoli and Arsenal, Kevin De Bruyne, who was in the starting lineup for the first time this season, played a full ninety‑minute match, but he could not prevent the downfall of the Red Devil in the final minutes.

In the 21st minute, Arsenal midfielder Michael Merino found an opening when he broke away from Kevin De Bruyne and headed the ball towards goal. The ball went past the keeper and increased the pressure on Napoli. The goal put Arsenal ahead and forced Napoli to chase the deficit.

Captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo immediately called out the Red Devil and reminded him of his duties, but De Bruyne reacted as if he had been stung by a wasp. His withdrawal from the game gave Napoli less control in midfield. The reaction was labeled by many as unexpected and frustrating.

Analysts point to a mental challenge

VTM analyst Marc Degryse described the situation as a mental test for De Bruyne. “It is a mental test for him to deal with this,” he said during the match analysis. He emphasized that the quality around De Bruyne was far below Manchester City’s level.

Toby Alderweireld, former captain of Antwerp, also expressed surprise. “I don’t quite understand why he had that reaction, because he loses his own man. When he watches the footage, he will also see that he should have followed his man,” said the former captain. Alderweireld recalled the candid words he shared with De Bruyne at the 2022 World Cup.

Full match, limited impact

Nevertheless, De Bruyne played the full ninety minutes, a rare complete deployment since his departure from Manchester City. The profit margin, however, lay in the quality surrounding him, which according to Degryse was “a lot less” than in previous seasons. Previously, De Bruyne contributed on average more than a goal every two games at City, a productivity that is now missing.

At Napoli, the fire of the Red Devil only manifested late, but the match shows that the mental challenge has not yet been overcome. The team continues to look for a way to align De Bruyne’s quality with the collective ambition. The coach indicated that the coming weeks will be crucial to reduce the mental pressure and restore the attacking dynamism.
