Karetsas' nervous moment in Champions League debut via dehydration

There is more clarity about the situation of the 18‑year‑old Greek Karetsas. The midfielder of Borussia Dortmund left Signal Iduna Park early on Wednesday evening during his Champions League debut against Villarreal, after he suddenly fell onto the grass and required medical assistance.

Karetsas started his first season at Dortmund excellently and earned a starting spot for his first match in the Champions League. However, midway through the first half things went wrong: he collapsed, covered his face with his hands and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher amid loud applause.

Dortmund initially reported that the Greek was dealing with ‘circulatory problems’, but later the club clarified that he was otherwise fine and was taken to the hospital for further examination.

Hospital examinations now point to dehydration as the cause of the incident. Nothing serious appears to be wrong, but the club is still awaiting a definitive update on Karetsas's availability.
