Kane's penalty shatters Bundesliga century record as Bayern dominate

Harry Kane's 39th‑minute penalty on Friday gave Bayern Munich a 2‑0 advantage against Union Berlin, making the 33‑year‑old England striker the fastest player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals. The decisive strike came after a Wednesday, Jan 14, 2026 photo of Kane reacting in MUNICH, captured by AP Photo/Martin Meissner.

Record‑breaking penalty

Kane's milestone arrived in his 99th league appearance according to one report, while another source puts it at 98 matches, meaning he broke the record in either 98 or 99 games. The previous benchmark was set by Dieter Müller of Cologne, who needed either 123 or 129 matches in the 1970s, depending on the account. By converting the spot‑kick, Kane eclipsed Müller’s long‑standing achievement.

Bayern's dominant display

Jamal Musiala opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and Michael Olise added a third before the break, giving Bayern a 3‑0 lead at halftime. The penalty resulted from a foul by Union defender Tom Rothe on Olise, with referee Benjamin Brand pointing to the spot. In the second half Kane doubled his tally at 54 minutes, Ismael Saibari entered at 70, and Olise completed a brace at 73 and 76 minutes, sealing a 7‑0 victory.

Before this surge Bayern endured an unconvincing spell, drawing goalless with Schalke and edging a 2‑1 win over Elversberg. The week prior Kane had already opened his Bayern account by netting the winner in a 2‑1 triumph over Elversberg.

Since joining Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, Kane has finished as the Bundesliga’s top scorer in each of his three seasons – 36 goals in 2023‑24, 26 in 2024‑25 and 36 in 2025‑26 – and claimed the European Golden Shoe in 2024 and 2026. Across all competitions he has amassed 154 goals in 151 appearances for the German club.

His 100‑goal haul places him seventh on the all‑time Bundesliga scoring list, having recorded 152 goals in 154 league matches for Bayern. The record further cements his status among the league’s elite marksmen.

As England captain, Kane’s achievement adds a historic chapter to Bayern’s season, reinforcing their position at the top of the German Liga and highlighting the impact of a striker who arrived just three years ago.
