Kampl swaps Leipzig for a Mallorca farm: a new life
Almost three hundred appearances for RB Leipzig and a nine‑year spell ended abruptly when 35‑year‑old Sloveen Kevin Kampl announced his retirement in January, citing his brother’s sudden death and his father’s serious illness; he has since turned to farming on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
Vandaag, at 21:30, Kevin Kampl made the news public and formally terminated his contract with RB Leipzig, saying family priorities had shifted after the tragedies.
During those nine years he was a key player for Leipzig, featuring in almost three hundred matches and establishing himself as a midfield mainstay.
In October his brother died suddenly and his father fell gravely ill; Kampl later added, “We don’t have much time on earth so it is important to spend it with the people we love most.”
He returned to his birthplace, Solingen, to be with his family, and later his father also passed away. Reflecting on that period he told , “It was a shitty year. I can’t do anything about it.”
On Mallorca he now runs a small finca, posting an Instagram photo in a straw hat beside a basket of vegetables and fruit.
He described the harvest: “We have melons, watermelons, tomatoes, onions, peppers and much more. It grows like crazy, and our olive oil tastes fantastic.”
Kampl said life goes on despite the difficulty of acceptance, adding that “the peace and calm in Mallorca does us all good.”
He remains a follower of RB Leipzig, stating, “Naturally, I’m always up‑to‑date and will stay that way. Who knows what the future holds? Maybe I’ll be Leipzig’s trainer.”
Dat does not mean he has turned his back on football forever; the former international keeps the door open for a possible coaching role.
