Kai Rooney’s scholarship sparks debate over his dancing past
Sixteen‑year‑old Kai Rooney has signed a first‑year scholarship contract with Manchester United, cementing his place in the club’s Under‑18 side. The son of United’s all‑time leading scorer Wayne Rooney hopes the deal will pave a route to the first team at Old Trafford, following his father’s legendary path.
Scholarship contract signed
The scholarship, which runs for one year, allows Kai to continue his education while training with United’s youth set‑up. It marks the latest step after re‑joining the academy at age eleven. He now features for United’s Under‑18 side, aiming to break into the first team. The teenager re‑joined the club’s youth ranks at eleven, after a brief spell elsewhere.
United’s interest is amplified by his lineage. Wayne Rooney remains the club’s all‑time leading scorer and a former Champions League winner, setting a high benchmark. The club hopes the young forward can emulate that success at Old Trafford.
Dancing doubts and father’s pride
Coleen Rooney recalled that Kai once juggled a potential career in hip‑hop dance before choosing football. She described a moment when he performed a Michael Jackson routine in goal, one glove on, prompting her to wonder if he was wasting time. The youth coach, however, encouraged him to stay, saying enjoyment was enough.
Wayne Rooney said he is proud watching his son and that no pressure has been applied to force a football career. “I grew up on a council estate in Liverpool with a hunger to become a footballer,” he explained, adding that Kai now enjoys greater privileges. He noted that Kai already holds a long‑term contract with the club. The club’s official MAN UTD channels will broadcast his progress.
At the back end of last season Kai suffered an injury that ruled him out of United’s FA Youth Cup final, a match they lost to neighbours Manchester City. The setback delayed his progress but the club remains confident. The next milestone will be a professional contract when he turns seventeen.
