Juventus fined €10,000 for disrupting tribute to Sandro Mazzola

On Sunday, Italian stadiums observed a minute of silence in tribute to Sandro Mazzola, a legend of the Nerazzurri who died on September 19. At the Juventus Stadium, some supporters broke the silence with chants, prompting the intervention of the Italian Federation.

Reduced sanction after club reaction

The Federation imposed a €10,000 fine on the Old Lady, far lower than the initially planned €50,000 and the threat of a match behind closed doors.

The bianconero board issued a statement condemning the chants, declaring: “There is no rivalry that can justify a lack of respect during a minute of silence. Honouring the memory and gathering in remembrance represents a shared responsibility that transcends affiliations and colours.”

The sanction could have been much harsher; the Federation initially considered a €50,000 fine and a match behind closed doors. The club’s statement ultimately urged the transalpine authorities to reduce the penalty.

Sandro Mazzola spent his entire career wearing the Nerazzurri colours, from 1961 to 1976, during which he won, among others, two Champions League titles.

This incident reminds us that respect during moments of commemoration remains a collective responsibility, and that a lack of class can now be paid for with a fine.
