Juventus’ 3-0 defeat fuels criticism of Tottenham loanees Vicario and Sarr

Juventus’ 3-0 loss to Lazio on Sunday has prompted harsh assessments of the Tottenham Hotspur loanees Guglielmo Vicario and Pape Matar Sarr, with Italian media rating them below average. The defeat left the Bianconeri eighth in Serie A, holding just 11 points from seven matches and eight points adrift of the leaders.

Loan details and timing

Both Vicario and Sarr arrived at Juventus on loan from Tottenham in the summer of 2026. Italy international goalkeeper Vicario completed his move on 18 August, while Sarr’s loan was announced on 1 September. Juventus retain an option to make Vicario’s deal permanent next summer.

Match performance and criticism

Vicario featured for Juventus against Lazio at the Allianz Stadium, conceding three goals and producing three shots on target. He was given a 6 out of 10 rating by TuttoJuve and a 5.5 out of 10 by CalcioMercato, both outlets noting his inability to prevent the visitors’ scoring.

Sarr played 87 minutes in midfield, earning a 4.5 out of 10 from TuttoJuve and a 5 out of 10 from CalcioMercato. Critics highlighted his loss of possession, tactical struggles after Juventus switched to a 4‑4‑2, and a general disconnect from teammates.

Vicario’s response

After the match Vicario said, “There are absolutely no excuses to hide behind. We need to be fully aware of the history of this Club and the expectations that come with it. Today, we performed below the required standard, and we need to analyse our performance both individually and as a team.”

Despite his remarks, the Italian press remained unimpressed, underscoring the urgency for both loanees to improve if they are to secure future roles at Juventus or return to Tottenham with enhanced reputations.
