Juve face Serie A opener without defender after fan tackle

Defender Federico Gatti was left in pain after a fan slide‑tackled him during a pitch invasion at Juventus’ Allianz Stadium on Monday.

The incident raises doubts about his availability for Juve’s Serie A opener against Frosinone next Sunday (23) in the half‑time break of a friendly against the club’s under‑23 side.

Fan invasion disrupts tradition

Pitch invasions by fans are a tradition during the annual season‑opening friendly between the first team and the “Old Lady’s” youth side. However, this year the celebrations started early and fans stormed the field at half‑time.

While most players ran to the dressing room, Gatti was left standing with his back to the crowd. He was caught off guard by the rapid approach and was hit by a slide tackle from a fan.

Consequences for player and club

According to dello Sport, the defender was rested from Tuesday’s training session. Medical tests did not reveal a serious injury, but he continues to feel pain and will be reassessed throughout the week to determine his fitness for the opener.

The uncontrolled invasion also damaged the Allianz Stadium turf. Emergency repairs are required before Juventus’ first home match, scheduled for August 29 against Parma.

Juventus’ board is already reviewing the incident and may alter the format of the tradition starting next year to protect players’ safety. The aim is to prevent further incidents and ensure the physical safety of the squad.
