Jürgen Klopp picks Ter Stegen as goalkeeper for Nations League duel

In the illuminated Ajax‑stadium, Marc‑André Ter Stegen stands ready, the 34‑year‑old goalkeeper who this season is on loan from FC Barcelona. For the first Nations League duel against the Netherlands, national team coach Jürgen Klopp has unequivocally named him as the first‑choice keeper, and he will lead the German defence.

Extended international period

In the coming weeks an exceptionally long international period will be played. European nations will play four Nations League matches instead of the usual two. In Group A2 are the Netherlands, Germany, Greece and Serbia, each meeting each other at least once.

Klopp emphasizes Ter Stegen’s role

Freshly appointed national team coach Jürgen Klopp has announced a 44‑man squad, divided into two phases. The first 22 players, including Ter Stegen, will contest the matches against the Netherlands and Greece. The remaining 22 will first play against Serbia and then also against Greece.

During a press conference of the DFB, Klopp emphasized that Ter Stegen is still the number one. “Marc‑André will be in the starting lineup for our first match,” he said, confirming the starting spot against the Oranje.

Klopp explained that the team needs a stable core, after which young players can be added. “I have known Marc for a long time. Manuel Neuer was long the best goalkeeper in the world, but everyone knew that Ter Stegen was also a world‑class goalkeeper,” said the national coach.

He also pointed to an injury that Marc suffered at an unfortunate moment, but confirmed that the 34‑year‑old is now fit and the same goalkeeper as before. “Marc brings experience, makes a very good impression at Ajax, and for now he is our first goalkeeper,” said Klopp.
