June deadline pushes Manchester City to block Real Madrid for Gvardiol

Manchester City face a crucial need to cement their defensive core before pre‑season under incoming manager Enzo Maresca, and to prevent Real Madrid from poaching a key defender. The June deadline adds urgency, as the club aims to lock down talent before the summer transfer window closes. Josko Gvardiol, the 24‑year‑old Croatian, is at the centre of that strategy.

Gvardiol will sign a fresh Manchester City contract on Monday, extending his stay beyond the current deal that already runs until June 2028. The move is explicitly designed to thwart Real Madrid’s interest and cement his future at the Etihad.

The Croatia international arrived from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 and has since become a defensive mainstay for Manchester City. His rapid integration has made him a regular feature in the back line.

His experience with the Croatian national team adds valuable depth to the club’s defence. The international exposure complements his club performances.

Gvardiol featured regularly under Pep Guardiola, earning a reputation as one of the side’s standout performers. He will now continue under incoming manager Enzo Maresca, providing continuity in the defensive unit. The club’s confidence in his abilities is evident.

His existing contract already runs to June 2028, and the Monday signing will layer additional commitment onto the Etihad Stadium project. The new terms further bind the Croatia defender to the Manchester City Club.

Director of football Hugo Viana is eager to lock in key players before the summer transfer window closes, and securing Gvardiol early aims to stabilise the defensive core. This timing is crucial as the club begins pre‑season preparations.

Gvardiol returned from the FIFA World Cup where Croatia were eliminated by Portugal 2‑1, adding recent international experience to his résumé. According to Sam Lee, he will complete media duties on Monday, mirroring Phil Foden’s recent four‑year deal that runs until 2030.

Viana stressed the importance of building around a core group, noting Gvardiol’s ability to play both centre‑back and left‑back offers tactical flexibility. The new contract reduces uncertainty around one of the season’s most prominent negotiations, joining Foden’s renewal and the record signing of Elliot Anderson as Manchester City solidify their foundations for the upcoming campaign.
