July Harvest, AC Milan triumph: Italy’s Wheat fields turn football

In July, while Italy celebrates the heat‑baked harvest, the Pitch becomes a stage for AC Milan’s historic victories, turning the month traditionally known as the Wheat Harvest into a football showcase that contrasts rural tradition with sporting triumph. The juxtaposition highlights how the same July sun that ripens grain also fuels a surge of silverware for the Rossoneri.

Historically, July is called the Month of Wheat or Harvest Month, when wheat is collected and threshed under the summer sun. The name derives from the Latin Iulius, honoring Julius Caesar, who was born in July. Old sayings and rural wisdom accompany the heat‑baked fields.

The phrase “Luglio col bene che ti voglio” echoes from a beloved Italian song that once captured the vibrant spirit of the country. Decades ago the line became a cultural touchstone, linking July to affection and national pride.

In football, July is usually short on official matches. Teams typically reunite, begin training sessions and play opening friendlies, marking the start of a new season.

AC Milan, however, rewrote the usual script. On 3 July the Rossoneri celebrated two historic trophies: the 1956 Coppa Latina and the 1977 Coppa Italia, turning the month into a rare occasion of official silverware.

Seventy years ago, on 3 July 1956, AC Milan faced Athletic Bilbao at Milano’s Arena Civica, wearing a white shirt with red and black horizontal stripes, and secured a 3‑1 win to lift their second Coppa Latina.

July also saw further cup glory: the Rossoneri won Coppa Italia finals on 5 July 1972 against Napoli, on 1 July 1973 against Juventus, and on 3 July 1977 at San Siro in the Derby della Madonnina against Inter.

During the extended conclusion of the 2019/20 season, AC Milan contested ten Serie A matches in July, winning seven and drawing three against SPAL, Napoli and Atalanta.

Across those ten games the Rossoneri scored 26 goals, an average of almost three per match, underscoring the attacking intensity of their July campaign.

The club has also launched its 2026/27 home kit, now available for purchase, allowing fans to celebrate the July heritage on and off the field.
