Julien Duranville's uncertain future between Dortmund and Lyon

Julien Duranville's uncertain future between Dortmund and Lyon

On the training ground of Olympique Lyonnais, the twenty‑year‑old Belgian scans the empty lines, recalling the prodigy who, at sixteen, was already making the King Baudouin Stadium vibrate. Julien Duranville, signed for close to ten million euros, is still waiting for his true take‑off.

At Anderlecht, he caused a sensation from the age of sixteen, kicking off his meteoric career. His talent quickly attracted the attention of Borussia Dortmund, which signed him in January 2023 for close to ten million euros, describing him as one of the biggest prospects of his generation.

The move to Borussia Dortmund

Making his Bundesliga debut at seventeen, Duranville has logged only fifteen league matches, nine Champions League appearances and one cup game, surprisingly modest numbers for a player of his calibre. Despite these limited statistics, sporting director Sebastian Kehl said the club still sees his full potential, while acknowledging that injuries have prevented him from fully showcasing his talent.

During his loan to Basel at the start of 2026, Duranville explained that his body was playing tricks on him after his move to Germany, adding that he had still grown a few centimetres and needed to “find a way to adapt his still‑developing body to senior football.”

In the summer of 2025, during the Club World Cup against Real Madrid, he suffered a serious shoulder injury that required surgery. This injury added to Dortmund’s investment in his physical stability, making his recovery all the more difficult.

New challenge at Olympique Lyonnais

Dortmund eventually handed Duranville over to Olympique Lyonnais for five million euros, a sum that could rise to 8.5 million with bonuses, and the player signed until 2031. The Lyon club saw him as the successor to Afonso Moreira, but he first needs to regain fitness and establish himself in a side that has started very well without him.

His attributes – explosiveness, changes of direction, one‑on‑one actions and the ability to unsettle a defender at rest – only fully shine when he enjoys a constant tempo and solid confidence.

Coach Niko Kovac emphasized that, technically excellent and extremely dynamic, Duranville must learn to play more simply at times and to show greater defensive discernment.

Julien Duranville’s journey illustrates the challenges faced by young Belgian prodigies: brilliant talent, but hampered by recurring injuries and a lack of sufficient minutes to flourish at Europe’s biggest clubs.
