Julian Nagelsmann as a possible rescue as Leipzig struggles

While the Red Bulls are struggling with inconsistent results under coach Martin Demichelis, the return of their former success coach Julian Nagelsmann is becoming increasingly concrete, reports Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg. The club sits in ninth place in the Bundesliga and now has to choose between an uncertain continuation or a radical change of direction.

Internal unrest and performance problems

Sky journalists Florian Plettenberg and Philipp Hinze reported that intensive discussions are taking place within RB Leipzig about the position of Martin Demichelis, who was appointed last summer. Demichelis replaced Ole Werner, who led the team to a third‑place finish last season and thereby secured Champions League football. Werner was dismissed after the Global Team of Red Bull Soccer, then under the leadership of Jürgen Klopp, demanded more intensity, more attractive football and a stronger ‘Red Bull‑DNA’.

The new coach has so far averaged 1.95 points per game, a figure that falls below expectations. The results are mixed: convincing wins against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3‑0) and Hamburger SV (5‑0) were alternated with defeats to Werder Bremen (3‑1), Bayer Leverkusen (2‑0) and in the Champions League to Como (4‑1).

Availability of Nagelsmann and possible change of direction

Julian Nagelsmann, who previously led the club to the Champions League semi‑final, has been available since last summer after his departure as Germany’s national team coach. Sky cites that part of the management is already considering him as a successor. “After this start the first talks about Demichelis’s future are inevitable,” Sky says.

Demichelis must prepare for a challenging period with upcoming matches against Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and PSV and Real Madrid in the Champions League. Roger Schmidt, who was appointed on 1 October as Klopp’s successor at Red Bull, wants to first get to know Demichelis’s ideas better before passing judgment. “October will be crucial for Demichelis,” Sky states.
