Jorge Jesus' broken promise fuels Ronaldo's sense of betrayal

Cristiano Ronaldo felt betrayed after Jorge Jesus failed to keep a promised public apology for the warm‑up incident that saw the striker idle for around 30 minutes during Portugal’s loss to Noruega, a dispute first detailed by Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre on El Chiringuito and later reproduced by Record.

Private meeting reveals apology pledge

According to Segundo Aguirre, Jesus, Ronaldo and Pedro Proença, president of the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol, met on Tuesday night. In that meeting the coach admitted he had left the striker warming up for about 30 minutes without bringing him onto the pitch. The admission was described as an error on Jesus’ part.

Jesus told Cristiano, “Jorge Jesus pede desculpas ao Cristiano por colocá-lo para aquecer durante 30 minutos e não colocá-lo para jogar.” He also pledged to apologise publicly before the upcoming match against Denmark, saying he would “not only apologise in private but also say publicly that he was wrong.”

Press conference deepens the rift

When the press conference took place, Jesus delivered a markedly different message, claiming the earlier discussion was “lies that nobody believes.” Ronaldo exploded, saying he felt betrayed by the contrast between the private promise and the public statement.

Aguirre recounted that Jesus had approached Ronaldo beforehand, saying, “Olha, foi assim, me entende? Não administrei bem a situação. Estamos juntos, me desculpa. Se tiver coletiva, vou esclarecer tudo, vou pedir desculpas. Não se preocupa, vai ficar tudo bem.”

Later Jesus asserted he would not alter his ideas because of Ronaldo, adding that a press briefing twelve hours later left the striker “still worse, wanting to show that he is the one in charge and that Cristiano is just another.” He concluded, “por isso digo: traição.”
