Jonas Hofmann to Bayer Leverkusen abroad, Al‑Shabab interested
On Bayer Leverkusen's training ground, as the sun sets over the BayArena, the 34-year-old attacking midfielder Jonas Hofmann talks about his future. His contract expires in July, his market value is €1.5 million, and he is considering a move abroad.
In the summer of the previous year, Al‑Shabab from the Saudi Pro League showed interest in Hofmann, but the player ultimately stayed at Bayer Leverkusen. “That had relatively little to do with private matters,” he explained, after becoming a father for the second time.
Contract Situation and Outlook
Since the start of the season, Hofmann has been in the final year of his contract and is now only a reserve in the squad. A contract extension will not come, so he will be 35 years old when it expires in July.
The 34-year-old veteran emphasizes that he is not at the end of his career yet and plans to play for another two to three years. “We can very, very well imagine going abroad, because now, towards the end, the factor of enjoying a bit is also appealing,” Hofmann said laughing.
A possible destination could be outside Europe, perhaps even the USA. In Major League Soccer there are currently 17 German professionals, including Thomas Müller, against whom Hofmann has played most often in his career.
Career Statistics and Potential Targets
Since his transfer from Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2023 for €10 million, Hofmann has made 92 appearances, scored 14 goals and provided 17 assists for Bayer Leverkusen. In his first season he was a regular starter, as the club won the double of the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup.
