Jon Martín back on Real Madrid's radar: the €60 million clause

In the Valdebebas office, Real Madrid executives are reviewing again the file of Real Sociedad centre‑back Jon Martín, whose contract runs until 2031 and includes a €60 million release clause. Facing a shortage of centre‑backs in José Mourinho's squad, the white club is considering paying the full clause, as Real Sociedad has made it clear that it will not negotiate its defence.

Reactivated interest after the summer

According to sources, Real Madrid reactivated its interest in Jon Martín after a summer in which he was already on its agenda. It is not a novelty in Valdebebas: in May the club considered three plans to avoid the full payment of the clause, and at Anoeta Real Sociedad's position did not change.

Firm stance of Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad has stated that it will not open talks with any club; anyone who wants the player must pay the €60 million release clause. The same response was given to Madrid when Mourinho requested Jon Martín as the first signing to strengthen the back line.

Currently there is no official communication from either club. The centre‑back, with a contract until 2031, does not create a selling urgency for Real Sociedad, which prefers to keep its defence intact.

Madrid's defensive need

During the summer transfer window, the sporting department handled other names, but the lack of exits for some defenders stalled further moves. In April, after the Éder Militão deal, Jon Martín already topped the list of centre‑backs the club wanted to bring in.

Jon Martín established himself last season as one of the great breakthroughs of the team coached by Pellegrino Matarazzo and, alongside Álex Zubeldia, is considered untouchable at Real Sociedad. His departure would leave a gap that Madrid would have to fill with the clause money.

For Real Madrid, the profile fits: a young centre‑back, already proven in LaLiga and with room to grow, who would arrive without an adaptation period. The club can pay the clause at any time, but the player could only be registered when the winter market opens in January. The decision depends on whether the sporting department assumes the outlay mid‑season and whether defensive departures maintain the urgency that has reactivated the deal.
