John Terry says England have had to hire an iconic manager to drop Lampard

John Terry believes England should have hired an iconic manager to drop Frank Lampard, and he also mentions Steven Gerrard as another player who might have been left out. The former defender’s wish reflects his view that the Three Lions lacked top‑class leadership in the dugout. He made the comment during a 2024 interview.

Christy’s rise at GIVEMESPORT

Christy is Football Operations Lead at GIVEMESPORT and has spent more than twelve years in the football content industry. After graduating with a degree in History and Politics from the University of Leicester, he joined Football FanCast as an intern in 2012.

He progressed from shift writer to Editor‑in‑Chief at Football FanCast, a role he held throughout 2019 before moving to the GMS team in late 2020. His career path shows a steady climb through editorial responsibilities.

Christy now creates opinion, news, features and viral football content, covering the Premier League, the Championship and the England National Team. His output reaches a wide audience across the major English competitions.

Beyond his professional duties, Christy is a proud member of the Football Writers’ Association, a Charlton Athletic fan and an avid follower of wrestling. These personal interests round out his profile within the sport.

John Terry critiques England’s managerial choices

Speaking to Simon Jordan on the Up Front podcast in 2024, Terry questioned whether England ever enjoyed the best managers during the Golden Generation era. “There were clearly some top, top managers in the world at the time. Did we have the best managers as England managers? No,” he said.

He pointed to Jose Mourinho as a counter‑example, noting that Mourinho was one of the greatest managers in Premier League history and could have provided the leadership England lacked. Terry argued that the absence of such a figure contributed to the nation’s under‑achievement.

Terry also highlighted the long‑standing midfield partnership problem between Lampard and Gerrard, suggesting that managerial decisions had hampered their effectiveness. While he placed some blame on the players for not delivering consistently, he maintained that the right manager could have maximised the talent available.

The former captain recalled the depth of England’s Golden Generation, listing stars such as Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes, Joe Cole, Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen. Despite this wealth of talent, the team never progressed beyond the quarter‑finals at a World Cup and failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

In Terry’s view, the missing ingredient was not the players but the leadership on the touchline. He concluded that hiring an iconic manager might have altered the trajectory of England’s fortunes during that period.
