Johannes Spors guides Southampton through Spygate turmoil
When a video on the club’s website refused to play, a notice warned that "To play this video you need to enable JavaScript in your browser" – a reminder that even the digital side of Southampton was caught up in the Spygate saga. Later that morning, technical director Johannes Spors spoke on BBC Radio Solent, outlining the challenges ahead.
Spors, appointed Southampton’s group technical director in February 2025, arrived with a résumé that includes six sporting director roles, notably at Standard Liege in the Belgian Pro League and Serie A side Genoa. His experience in Italy and at Red Bull shaped his approach to building the club’s structure.
In May, the Saints were expelled from the Championship play‑offs and docked four points after admitting they had spied on three rival clubs during the season. The revelation sent shockwaves through the Championship and placed head coach Tonda Eckert’s future under intense scrutiny.
FA sanction and club response
As the new season began, uncertainty lingered over whether Eckert would face a personal ban. Early October brought relief when the Football Association fined him £28,000 and suspended a six‑week ban until the end of the next campaign. Owner Dragan Solak and the board chose to retain Eckert, offering him a second chance.
Spors backs Eckert personally
"Of course, it did put me into a difficult position," Spors told BBC Radio Solent. He added that few sporting directors have ever had to plan a season amid such uncertainty. "I only felt one choice and I’m happy that everybody around me, including Dragan Solak, was very aligned," he said, emphasizing the decision to stand by Eckert.
Spors explained that his support went beyond professional duties. "He’s a young man with a lot going on, moving to a new country as an unknown," Spors said, noting he helped Eckert with knowledge, expertise and friendship, and ensured additional specialists were available to assist him throughout the summer.
Season start and home form
Southampton have begun the Championship strongly, sitting eighth after eleven matches and boasting the league’s best home record – unbeaten with five wins and one draw at St Mary’s. On matchdays Spors can be seen in the directors’ box alongside chief executive Phil Parsons and other board members, underscoring his hands‑on role in the club’s resurgence.
