Joey Veerman looks to Xavi for guidance after Dutch recall
At the Amsterdam Arena, Joey Veerman sprinted into the midfield as the Netherlands edged Serbia 2-1, his first start under Barcelona‑born coach Xavi. The former PSV star, recalled after years out of Ronald Koeman’s plans, seemed intent on proving his worth.
Xavi celebrated his inaugural victory as head coach, having previously overseen a 1-1 draw with Germany. The win marked a promising start for the former Barcelona midfielder now steering the Dutch side, and raised hopes that Veerman could absorb his mentor’s vision.
Veerman told, “He has an idea of how I should play in my position, so it helps that he has played in that position as well.” He was quick to temper any direct comparisons, insisting he remains his own player.
From PSV to Dortmund
After strong seasons in the Eredivisie with PSV, Veerman left Dutch football this summer for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. He departed PSV after 198 games, netting 31 goals and providing over 50 assists, and collected three Eredivisie titles, two KNVB Cups and three Super Cups.
Since joining Dortmund, Veerman has featured in seven matches, recording one assist. His two appearances under Xavi have lifted his Netherlands tally to 18 caps, underscoring the midfielder’s growing role on the international stage.
