Joe Cole says Xabi Alonso sent a furious message after Brentford loss

Sixteen-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli was introduced by Xabi Alonso as Chelsea chased the game at the GTech Community Stadium on Friday, a move that Joe Cole says prompted a furious message to the board.

The Blues conceded three times in the second half, extending a pattern of at least two goals allowed in every Premier League match this season.

Moises Caicedo remains sidelined with a muscle injury, missing yet another fixture against the Bees, while Reece James was also absent despite having featured regularly in midfield under Alonso.

In the midfield void, Alonso started 36-year-old Jordan Henderson alongside summer signing Valentin Barco, with Romeo Lavia on the bench before turning to teenage Nicoll-Jazuli as Chelsea trailed by two goals; Fabio Carvalho later struck in injury time.

Midfield turnover and failed signings

Midfield was a strength last season, but the squad looks lighter after selling Andrey Santos to Manchester United and Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City, the latter on deadline day.

A deal to bring Lamine Camara from Monaco collapsed at the last minute, leaving the club without a direct replacement.

Critics highlight midfield blind spot

Former striker Glenn Murray described Nicoll-Jazuli’s debut as a “big message” to Chelsea’s decision‑makers, arguing the club has a blind spot in central midfield.

Joe Cole agreed, saying the manner in which the 16‑year‑old was taken off the pitch “was clear as day” and underscored the board’s lack of midfield depth.

Alonso has already employed three different midfield combinations in five league games, even deploying right‑back Malo Gusto in central roles.
