JJ Gabriel’s exit forces Manchester United to rethink youth policy

JJ Gabriel, the 15‑year‑old forward who featured in Manchester United’s 2026/27 first‑team squad photo, has formally requested a move away from the club after his representatives presented three extraordinary demands regarding game time.

Demands that sparked the departure

Gabriel’s camp insisted he receive at least 20 minutes of action in each of three matches – against Sabah in the Champions League, Brighton in the Carabao Cup and Bournemouth in the Premier League – before the club would discuss a scholarship agreement.

The youngster’s family also sought assurances of first‑team opportunities, a request that United reportedly could not meet, prompting Gabriel to inform the club of his intention to leave on the eve of the Carabao Cup tie with Brighton.

Why United pursued the prodigy

Having trained with the first team last season and playing under Michael Carrick during pre‑season, Gabriel was seen as a highly rated prospect, having won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award and scoring 26 goals in 29 appearances in the 2025/26 season.

His recent form includes five goals in his first three matches of the current campaign, underscoring the club’s interest in fast‑tracking his development.

Implications for both parties

Gabriel has not trained at Carrington for more than two weeks, opting instead for individual sessions near Barcelona with specialist local coaches, a routine that will continue until he turns 16 on Tuesday, 6 October.

With an Irish passport, he is eligible to join any European Union club once he reaches the required age, provided FIFA grants the necessary approval.

Manchester United remain registered with Gabriel until the end of the 2026/27 season but have warned they may explore legal avenues if another club attempts to sign him through what they consider a loophole in FIFA regulations.
