Jermaine Pennant warns JJ Gabriel against outside pressure as Arsenal past inspires

Former Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant has told JJ Gabriel, the 15‑year‑old Manchester United wonderkid, not to let others dictate his next move, recalling how his own transfer to Arsenal was arranged by his father when he was 15.

Gabriel’s desire to leave Old Trafford

The teenager shocked the football world last week when it emerged he had asked to leave Manchester United and wanted his registration cancelled in hopes of securing a move abroad. He has attracted interest from Premier League giants, as well as from Barcelona and Real Madrid, and even travelled to Spain to discuss a possible switch to the Camp Nou outfit.

Barcelona sporting director Deco, however, told the club is not interested in signing the youngster. While his next destination remains undecided, Gabriel appears desperate to exit Old Trafford, with reporting his family intend to relocate to Spain.

Pennant’s Arsenal experience and advice

Pennant explained that his father orchestrated his own move from Notts County to Arsenal in 1999, a transfer he had no say in. “I had zero role in it,” he said. “One evening my dad knocked at the door with all the other players and said, ‘Son, we’re going to London, we’re going to speak to Arsenal.’ I literally got my stuff, jumped in the back of a Range Rover and we drove down to London.”

He added that the next day he signed the contract and was back home on the train, having never spoken to Arsenal about the deal. Over five seasons Pennant made 26 appearances for the Gunners, later reflecting that staying at Notts County for another year might have been wiser.

Drawing parallels, Pennant warned that Gabriel’s decision “doesn’t really sound like he’s having a say.” He suggested the family and agents may be promising a brighter future at Real Madrid or Barcelona, noting the Spanish game is less physical and could offer a better chance to make a name.

Wayne Rooney, whose son Kai shares a youth team with Gabriel, also hinted that signs of a possible exit have long existed. Gabriel was set to be named in Manchester United’s Carabao Cup squad for the Brighton match before he requested to leave.

Pennant concluded by urging Gabriel to “stick to his guns” and make the decision himself, rather than being steered by external influences.
