Javier Aguirre tasked with reviving Valencia's LaLiga fortunes

Under the shadow of the Mestalla floodlights, Valencia CF unveiled 67‑year‑old Mexican Javier Aguirre as the new head coach of the first team. The club confirmed a contract that runs until the end of the current season, with automatic renewal clauses tied to specific sporting targets. Aguirre steps in with the clear brief of getting the squad’s LaLiga campaign back on track.

Aguirre's Spanish pedigree

The veteran manager brings a wealth of experience from Spain’s top flight, having previously guided Osasuna, Atlético de Madrid, Real Zaragoza, RCD Espanyol and Real Mallorca. His résumé also includes a spell at CD Leganés. Among his domestic honours is the 2004 Copa del Rey won with Real Zaragoza and a qualification for the UEFA Champions League while at Osasuna.

Valencia's precarious start

Valencia sit penultimate in the Liga table, having collected four points from their opening four matches. Aguirre replaces the dismissed Carlos Corberán as the club seeks to halt the slide. The sporting department, headed by Braulio Vázquez, expects his competitive profile to add immediate solidity and tactical reliability.

The contract runs to the season’s end, with an option for the club to extend it for an additional year. Automatic renewal clauses will trigger only if certain performance objectives are met, giving Valencia flexibility while rewarding success.

Aguirre will begin overseeing training sessions during the competitive break, preparing the team for his official debut in the next league fixture. His coaching staff will join him to stabilise the Che side ahead of a demanding stretch of fixtures.

The new boss is slated to be presented to the media on Monday 28 September in the press room of Mestalla, marking the formal start of his tenure at the Valencian club.
