Jamie Carragher slams Florian Wirtz after poor showing vs Bournemouth
At Anfield stadium, when Liverpool FC faced AFC Bournemouth, the young German Florian Wirtz was in the spotlight – and not in a positive way. The former Reds defender, Jamie Carragher, left no doubt in his post‑match podcast that the national team player's performance was completely inadequate.
Sharp words from the podcast
Jamie Carragher, Liverpool FC legend and TV pundit, again voiced sharp criticism of Florian Wirtz after the Reds' match against AFC Bournemouth. “Wirtz was once again really poor. There is simply nothing. Nothing happens at all,” said the 48‑year‑old on his show. He added that it was one of the worst performances he had ever seen from Wirtz in a Liverpool shirt.
Statistical background and tactical concerns
The German international has had hardly any direct goal involvements this season – so far only one assist after six league appearances. Carragher also complained that the ball‑play, supposedly Wirtz’s strength, is coming into play less and less. “I have criticized that he cannot produce the numbers. Normally he is precise, holds the ball and frees himself from tight situations,” he explained.
The former defender further expressed concern that Wirtz has not only been out of form since his move to Liverpool. “I think what we are seeing is exactly what he is,” said Carragher, recalling that he had already been worried about the player about twelve months ago.
Liverpool must add a second No 10 to unlock Wirtz’s magic
Under the new manager Andoni Iraola, Wirtz has no longer played in his preferred position behind the striker. Instead, he pushes other players, such as Dominik Szoboszlai, out of their natural positions. Carragher emphasized that the expectations placed on Wirtz – to lead Liverpool to another league title and into the Champions League – are almost unattainable.
With the upcoming marquee match against Manchester City in mind, the Reds icon advised leaving Wirtz out of the starting eleven. “Wirtz would not be in my Liverpool squad. At home against Manchester City – for me he must not be in that team,” he said.
Liverpool must act to rescue Florian Wirtz as doubts mount
In the Bournemouth game, Wirtz was on the pitch from the start, but was substituted after 71 minutes for Trey Nyoni because he could hardly make an impact. Carragher’s analysis thus remains a clear signal to manager Iraola and the club.
