Jamie Carragher says Andoni Iraola could link Chelsea to Liverpool for Alex Scott
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has praised Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott as a ‘wonderful’ player and suggested that Liverpool’s new manager Andoni Iraola could use his Bournemouth connections to bring the 23‑year‑old to Anfield, especially after Scott missed Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad despite an England call‑up last November.
Scott's rise and England recognition
Scott completed a move from Bristol City to Bournemouth in 2023. The transfer marked the start of his rapid development in English football.
Over the following three years he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most sought‑after central midfielders. His performances attracted attention from the league’s elite.
The 23‑year‑old earned his first senior England call‑up in November and was subsequently omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad. The omission highlighted his proximity to the national team’s top tier.
Transfer speculation, Liverpool link and upcoming clash
Throughout the summer transfer window his future was the subject of intense speculation, with Chelsea reported to have a strong interest. Media outlets noted the club’s sustained monitoring of his progress.
Speaking to, Carragher said: “I think he’s a wonderful player. There was a lot of interest in him in the summer and because Liverpool have a former Bournemouth manager, you almost think there will be a couple of players moving that way.”
The transfer deadline passed without a move, leaving Scott at the Vitality Stadium with two years remaining on his contract. Reports indicated that any bid would need to exceed £80 million to pry him away.
Iraola returned to the south coast to face Liverpool, giving Scott a chance to impress the Merseyside side. He described his Europa League debut, a 2‑1 win over Real Sociedad, as a “buzz” experience and highlighted his assist for Rayan’s decisive goal.
Twenty‑four hours later Thomas Tuchel included him in England’s Nations League squad for matches against Spain, Croatia and the Czech Republic, calling him “one of the best midfielders at the moment in the Premier League”.
Scott will now aim to see out another successful campaign with the Cherries. Iraola’s previous tenure at Bournemouth saw him manage Scott, establishing a working relationship that could facilitate a move.
Liverpool would need to meet the reported £80 million valuation before the summer window closes again. The financial hurdle remains the main obstacle to completing any potential transfer.
