Jamie Carragher lambasts Andoni Iraola for leaving Florian Wirtz on

Jamie Carragher expressed disbelief at Liverpool’s decision to keep Florian Wirtz on the pitch against Bournemouth, describing the German midfielder’s display as “really poor”. The Reds secured a 1-0 victory at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday, with Alexander Isak scoring the decisive goal in Andoni Iraola’s first match back at his former club.

Isak's match‑winning goal

Isak’s strike, his fourth Premier League goal of the season, arrived early in the second half and proved enough to clinch the win. A tweet on 20 September 2026 highlighted the moment, confirming the impact of the Swedish forward. Carragher criticised Wirtz’s first‑half effort, saying, “Simple passes, simple controls.” Wirtz has been really poor again. It’s just nothing. Nothing is happening there at all.” He added that the midfielder had repeatedly found himself in “simple areas” without making a difference.

The 23‑year‑old arrived from Bayer Leverkusen last year for a record £116 million fee, yet has struggled to justify the price tag. Carragher noted that while fans have been understanding of his situation, the expectation for goals and assists remains high.

Despite Carragher’s surprise that Iraola did not replace Wirtz at half‑time, the German international stayed on until the 71st minute, when 19‑year‑old Trey Nyoni entered the game. Carragher later remarked, “I’m surprised Wirtz hasn’t come off. His first two touches, he’s given it away twice. I didn’t expect him back on the pitch after half‑time.”

The Reds remain unbeaten this season and have moved up to sixth place in the Premier League, but the match underscored ongoing difficulties as players continue to adapt to Iraola’s tactical system.
