James McClean condemns Derry City's contract move as incomprehensible
James McClean, the Derry City midfielder, has publicly denounced the club's "incomprehensible" effort to end his contract, insisting that he will decide when to retire. The statement was released through the Professional Footballers' Association of Ireland (PFAI). McClean, who returned from Wrexham in January, has not featured since Derry's Conference League loss to Rijeka in early July.
Contract dispute escalates
Following the dismissal of manager Tiernan Lynch in August, reports emerged that Derry City were seeking to terminate McClean's deal, citing persistent injuries. The PFAI confirmed that the club attempted to invoke a clause in the Standard Players Contract that permits termination on six months' notice when a player is deemed to have "permanent incapacity". The clause, identified as Section 18, requires an independent physician’s assessment.
McClean issued an apology for what he described as "misjudged" criticism of the club’s overall regime, acknowledging that his frustrations should have remained "in‑house". He expressed regret for any public comments that may have harmed the club.
McClean's personal response
In his own words, McClean called the period "one of the most difficult periods of my life, both personally and professionally". He explained that he moved back to his hometown club from Wrexham in good faith, uprooting his family midway through the school year based on promises about playing time and post‑football prospects.
The 37‑year‑old midfielder highlighted that, despite his age, he is not permanently incapacitated. He disclosed a hip injury that has caused intermittent issues, but noted that he has trained fully for the past nine weeks and even took part in an internal club match.

Interim manager Mark Connolly said, "James has been training like you said, but we have just stuck with the same squad over the last few weeks as you can see. At the moment, this is just where we are. Every player is always considered but that is just where the squad was and what we picked."
Derry City have not commented on the contract claim, and a request for comment from the club went unanswered. The club’s spokesperson later indicated that the focus is on the upcoming Club Orange FAI Cup semi‑final against Galway United on Saturday.
The PFAI added that an independent physician confirmed McClean is currently fit and well, having sought treatment for his hip problem. The association stressed that any attempt to terminate a contract without due process sets a dangerous precedent for players in the league.
McClean concluded that he will decide his own retirement timeline, stating, "I am ready to play when called upon" and urging the club to provide the same duty of care afforded to other players at Derry City FC.
