Jaissle sees second defeat with Newcastle against promoted side
German coach Matthias Jaissle experienced his second league defeat as Newcastle United's manager when the Magpies unexpectedly lost 1-4 to promoted side Coventry City. The match marked another setback for the Nürtingen‑born Jaissle and left the fans in the stadium disappointed.
Coventry City's turbulent return
Coventry City, which had recently been promoted to the Premier League, had previously endured a very shaky comeback. Before the match the club had lost four of its five games. The team returned to the English top flight after a 25‑year absence, coached by ex‑Chelsea star Frank Lampard.
Jack Rudoni opened the scoring in the sixth minute, followed by Sidiki Cherif in the 48th minute. Sven Botman produced a spectacular long‑range shot in the 70th minute, which however did not equalise. Ellis Simms added another goal in the 81st minute, before Stephen Mfuni sealed the final score in the 86th minute.
Matthias Jaissle, a native of Nürtingen, took over in the summer as Eddie Howe's successor after previously working in Saudi Arabia. His arrival was seen as a fresh impetus for the Premier League club Newcastle United.
After the defeat Newcastle United sit in the middle of the table with eight points, a result that falls far short of the club's expectations. The point tally leaves the team behind the European top spots.
Frank Lampard, former international and Chelsea star, is leading Coventry City back into the Premier League and is trying to stabilise the team after a difficult start.
The second defeat under Jaissle highlights the challenges the German coach must face in the English top flight. Whether Jaissle can still turn things around remains to be seen.
