Italy top of the group for Euro 2028 with win over Turkey

Italy top of the group for Euro 2028 with win over Turkey

Italy beat Turkey, securing a place among the top three in the Nations League group, and with that the national side guarantees a seeded position for the Euro 2028 qualification draw, scheduled for 6 December in Belfast.

The seeds for Euro 2028

Italy will be one of the twelve seeds for the draw of the Euro 2028 qualifying groups. Portugal, the Netherlands, Greece, France, Spain and England have already secured a privileged position, thus excluding the possibility of sharing the same group with the Azzurri. The already‑qualified national teams will not be able to share the same pool with the Azzurri.

The twelve seeds will be chosen from the top three finishers of the four Nations League groups. To these will be added the four winners of the League A groups, who will be able to count on a qualifying group of four teams instead of five. The seeds will be guaranteed to contest a qualifying group consisting of four teams rather than five.

Italy currently occupies second place, behind France, in its section of the Nations League. The head‑to‑head clash against the Bleus is scheduled for 12 November at the San Siro Stadium, and securing first place could significantly affect the draw. The result of the 12 November match will be decisive in determining which of Italy and France will claim the top spot in the group.

Other tiers and prospects

At the moment, Switzerland is placed in the second tier, while Romania and Macedonia occupy the third. Armenia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Latvia and San Marino belong to the fourth tier, and Malta, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Gibraltar, Andorra and Liechtenstein make up the fifth. The other national teams remain awaiting the results of the upcoming matches to define their tier.

The situation could change in the upcoming matches: Croatia and Norway are still on the brink and a possible move to the second tier would make the draw more complex. Bosnia could also follow the same path. The outcome of these fixtures will be decisive for the composition of the qualifying groups.

The Euro 2028 qualifiers will start in March 2027 for the teams not involved in the Nations League's direct‑elimination phase. The others will begin on 23 September 2027.
