Italian federation ends turmoil with Mancini’s return as coach
Roberto Mancini has been reappointed as head coach of the Italiaanse national side of Italy, a decision announced by federation president Giovanni Malagò in Rome. The 61‑year‑old former striker returns after a three‑year hiatus, taking charge ahead of the Nations League matches starting 25 September.

Mancini previously led Italy from 2018 to 2023 and secured the 2021 Europese title.
The federation’s search had seen Pep Guardiola and Andrea Pirlo high on Giovanni Malagò’s list to replace Gennaro Gattuso, who left in April.

Guardiola declined availability, and Pirlo’s appointment stalled because of his links to a Russian gambling company.
Mancini’s first match in charge will be the Nations League clash against Belgium on 25 September, followed by fixtures with Turkey and France.

The Italian federation also appointed Claudio Ranieri as technical director, succeeding Paolo Maldini, who resigned after just 16 days when the Pirlo plan collapsed.
