Italia Mancini outlines youth‑first plan at Coverciano
Roberto Mancini, head coach of Italia, held a press conference at the Dal Centro Tecnico Federale in Coverciano to unveil a refreshed squad built around enjoyment and youth. He said the team must "play well, have fun and want to achieve something important" and hinted that the first test will be the upcoming match against Belgium.
Youth focus and long‑term planning
Mancini explained that he called a larger group of young players than usual because "it is right to know them directly" and to shape a strong side for the next 4 years. "If I had called older players first there would have been criticism," he warned, adding that the expanded call‑up allows him to assess talent on the field immediately.
Honouring the past while looking forward
The coach also paid tribute to the late Sandro Mazzola, stating, "Tra un po' ci saranno i funerali di Mazzola, volevo unirmi al cordoglio di tutta Italia nel ricordo di un mito come Sandro". He reflected on the Baldini era, noting it was useful for work with the U21 side and that "in the past we called more than 50 young players, if they are good we call them".
Mancini praised the support staff, saying, "Diana, you all know her, has lived unforgettable moments in Italian sport and will give us a great hand".
Addressing squad integration, he said, "From Dimarco to Palestra it is now fairly easy – two will not be there – but it will be important to have them all as soon as possible, even those injured".
On scouting abroad, Mancini warned against losing dual‑nationality talent, noting, "We must go see and choose them quickly, otherwise we risk losing them". He highlighted Zoma’s progress in the German Serie B, adding, "He is doing well and we hope he continues".
He asked experienced players to help the newcomers, saying, "The veterans should give a hand with the integration of the young. The youngsters, because they play relaxed, often do things the older ones do not because they think too much".
Regarding tactics, Mancini kept options open: "We can play with two strikers, a 4‑3‑3, or other systems. The players are capable of many things; we will train and see in the coming days". He concluded that physical readiness will be crucial, especially as September approaches, and that the team will aim to bring home something within the next 4 years.
