It's time for a Freiburg block in the German national team

It is time for a Freiburg block to be considered in the DFB‑team, says SWR‑sport editor Michi Glang. SC Freiburg is the team of the moment, as its impressive mid‑season report shows: six mandatory matches, six wins and 22:4 goals – a record that recalls FC Bayern.

Freiburg at the top of the table and in European competition

The Breisgau side lead the Bundesliga table and have thereby secured the lead in the domestic competition. At the same time they qualify again for European competition and are already in the second round of the DFB‑Cup. These positions underline the consistency achieved in the first weeks of the season.

Nomination potential for the first Klopp‑squad

In recent weeks several professionals of the sport‑club have put forward their names for the first Klopp‑squad of the new national coach Jürgen Klopp. If the 59‑year‑old coach announces his roster for the four Nations‑League‑matches on Thursday, Matthias Ginter, Philipp Treu, Maximilian Eggestein, Yannik Engelhardt and Derry Scherhant could be on the list. The sport‑club representatives emphasized in a comment that the performances in the matches justify the nomination.

For Ginter a (too late) comeback in the DFB‑team would be the truth, as sportingly he would already have been in the World Cup squad. Long‑time player Eggestein most recently shone as a goal scorer and could thereby secure his third appearance for the national team. Treu, Engelhardt and Scherhant would thus make their debut – a step that could attract many eyes in German football.

Klopp is expected to call up numerous debutants, so the trio of Treu, Engelhardt and Scherhant can harbour justified hopes. For the Freiburgers this means that their block could play a significant role in the DFB‑team in September 2026. The decision is likely to further fuel the discussion about the national lineup.

On Tuesday SWR‑sport editor Michi Glang discussed again in a comment the necessity of a Freiburg block. Six mandatory matches, six wins and the current league lead provide a strong foundation for that. For the German national team this block could be the optimal solution in September 2026.
